Event Recap: Overcoming the Challenge of Talent Acquisition and Hybrid Working

28/06/2022

Australia finds itself in the unique position where unemployment is sitting at historical lows whilst simultaneously the number of job vacancies is at an all time high. The demand and need for talented employees has never been this strong before. It was in this context that AHK Australien was proud to host an exciting workshop on current challenges surrounding talent acquisition and hybrid working culture at the Wilkhahn furniture showroom in Surry Hills on the 15th of June.

The event connected the AHK network with our trusted HR advisors and included breakout rooms on navigating talent acquisition and hybrid working. Across the morning, each stage of the employee journey was looked at, from recruitment and onboarding, to upskilling and working in a hybrid environment.

Splitting into breakout rooms, participants were given the opportunity to get hands on and gain practical knowledge in smaller group settings. The audience then regrouped, and a panel of experts discussed the main outcomes and learnings of each of the rooms. The conversation then evolved into a lively discussion with the audience as everyone shared their experiences from the breakout rooms, topics included:

The forgotten part of recruitment - ensuring your investment brings long-term success

Joanne Fisher from Fisher People in Culture asked the question of how to set your new recruit up for success in the short and long term? As the CEO & Founder of her company, Joanne used her breakout room to look at

  • The role of context, strategy and culture in recruitment and retention
  • Critical elements of effective onboarding
  • How intentional communication and messaging with the team and key stakeholders can make or break a successful hire

Learning: A practical guide to designing hybrid learning experiences

Samantha Mathews is a learning design consultant with Information Multimedia Communication Pty Ltd and highlighted to her breakout room the value of effective training tool. In her view this is achieved by:

  • Asking the right questions and analysing needs.
  • Converting a learning focus to a specific actions and business outcomes.
  • Defining the touchpoints in the learning ecosystem.
  • Mapping the learner journey.

Become a champion in leading hybrid teams

Gudrun Adam, Director for GA Consulting, focused on the new realities in the workplace with teams being split throughout the world, at home and in the office. Working with her participants she delved into the complexities of:

  • How to hold inclusive team meetings
  • How to consider individual needs
  • How to deliver effective office activities
  • Restarting F2F Communication

Tim Fisher from the not-for-profit JobsBank presented a keynote address and rounded out our panel, providing a valuable perspective on changing trends in recruitment, asking if there is a different way to think about what staff are looking for, and where to start?

Talent and employee retention are just one of a variety of topics AHK Australien is exploring with its members. Keep an eye out for events on the topics of digitalisation and decarbonisation as well as further discussions surrounding talent and HR as the year progresses.
