On 22 June 2021, the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment has announced updates regarding the 2021-22 BMSB Risk Season.

The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) is a type of stink bug that is considered an agricultural pest that is now widespread across Europe, including Germany. The BMSB is mainly harmful by sucking on fruits and fruit plants and can also transfer plant pathogens such as mold to useful and ornamental plants. It is usually transmitted across countries through container shipments as the bugs stick to goods and their packaging – this also includes vehicles and machinery.

Stakeholders in the import and shipping industries associated with importing goods that require increased intervention during the new season are affected by this notice. The update includes minor amendments to the Offshore BMSB Treatment Providers Scheme which sets out the minimum registration and compliance requirements for treatment providers conducting BSMSB treatments offshore. Germany is once again included in the target risk countries impacted by the restrictions for this season.

Treatment providers can apply on the website of the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment where you can find additional information on the matter. Please feel free to also contact our Customer Success Team for support.
