MEL | German Week Melbourne: Der Freischütz - Opera

Experience one of the most influential works of German Romantic opera at Melbourne's historic Athenaeum Theatre. 

This event is presented as part of German Week Melbourne by HENKELL BROTHERS and HENKELL WINES in cooperation with the AHK and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the German-speaking world through music, storytelling and artistic excellence. 

Premiered in 1821, Der Freischütz is regarded as a landmark of German Romantic opera. Drawing on folklore, mythology and the supernatural, Carl Maria von Weber's masterpiece tells a captivating story of love, ambition and fate set amongst mysterious forests and ancient legends. Its influence can be traced through the works of Wagner and many of the great composers who followed.

As one of the highlights of German Week Melbourne, this rare performance of Der Freischütz will be presented in the original German with English surtitles, offering an authentic and accessible cultural experience for both German speakers and international audiences alike.

AHK members who are unable to attend the exclusive networking reception on 23 October are warmly invited to experience Der Freischütz during its public performance on 24 October 2026. While the networking component is exclusive to the 23 October event, the 24 October performance offers the same outstanding musical experience and the opportunity to enjoy this landmark work of German Romantic opera as part of German Week Melbourne.
