From 20 to 25 September 2026, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), we will be organising a delegation to Germany for Australian stakeholders from the mining rehabilitation sector. This is a project-related support measure under the Market Development Program for SMEs. The aim is to support the business opportunities of German companies in Australia and is organised in collaboration with the IHK Cottbus and IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein.

Mine Rehabilitation & Post-Mining Transformation in Australia

A recent study by the Australian research organisation CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) anticipates the closure of almost 240 Australian mines by 2040, and estimates annual expenditure on mine rehabilitation and closure at AUD 4–8 billion. Through the successful implementation of projects in open-cast coal mine rehabilitation, Germany has been able to accumulate decades of valuable experience in the field of mine rehabilitation. Australian companies have a strong interest in this topic and are keen to learn from the experience of German companies.

In organising and conducting this delegation, our goal is to facilitate an exchange of knowledge and the associated development of partnerships. Participants will have the opportunity during the program to establish contacts with Australian stakeholders and to present their services and products in the field of mine rehabilitation.
