Oktoberfest at Hophaus Southgate: Melbourne’s best German bier, fare and wiener(dogs)

26/09/2018

This year, the best of the wurst will take over Hophaus from Friday 5 October until Sunday 14 October, while the dog race that stops Melbourne is on 13 October: Teckelrennen, the Annual Dachshund Race in the Southgate Podium Courtyard. Special fest bier, food and drinks will be on offer at the Bavarian bar and grill throughout the month of October.

With an inventive program of events, Hophaus has become the go-to destination for discerning Melburnians who want to get their ‘German’ on and celebrate the unique fun that is Oktoberfest, without trekking to Munich.

“We’ve packed the fest into nine days this year, so you might want to make some room in your diaries. After our huge opening weekend on 6-7 October with sausage eating and strong man competitions, family games and more; we’ve got a Ladies Who Love Beer Dinner, a Hairy Man Competition, and of course, the ever popular Dachshund Race,” says Hophaus Manager Ryan McKelvie.

“We’ve really focused on the food and drink menu this year – with tap fest biers including Erdinger’s official fest bier, brewed just for Oktoberfest, Weihenstephaner’s award winning Vitus (Best Strong Wheat Beer), the amazing Weihenstephaner Sierra Nevada Braupakt collaboration and more.”

Munich’s best fest biers will be on tap from 1-31 October, accompanied by a menu of German style cocktails such as the Apfel Strudel, featuring Applejack 86 brandy with cloudy apple, vanilla and chai, and Hophaus’ version of an espresso martini: the White Chocolate Espresso Martini with Bacardi fuego rum, real white chocolate and real hazelnut alongside the usual espresso and kalhua, created after lengthy experimentation and deliberation.
