“On a sustainable course”

Hamburg Süd today published its new Sustainability Report. Under the title “On a sustainable course”, the shipping company reports on more than 80 pages about key aspects, successes achieved, and relevant developments in 2016 and 2017, based on the “Core” option of the new guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Hamburg Süd also refers to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. “With this latest report we are once again underlining the high priority that sustainability has for Hamburg Süd,” says CEO Dr. Arnt Vespermann. “We are convinced that sustainable action pays off for everyone – for our customers concerning their supply chains, for the environment, for our employees, and for us as a company.

The content of the report was determined on the basis of a survey of various stakeholder groups such as customers, suppliers, NGOs, and employees. Environmental aspects such as oil spills, air emissions, and energy efficiency were particularly important to all stakeholders. Occupational safety and data privacy are also very important. Hamburg Süd has a positive balance on all issues. CO2e emissions were reduced further – by as much as 40 percent per TEUkm by the end of the reporting period compared to the base year 2009. Over both years no oil spills or data breaches were registered company-wide.

Consumption and emissions are listed in a detailed environmental balance sheet. In addition, Hamburg Süd reports on various projects that underline its sustainability strategy. These include a joint project with the customer Electrolux to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in ports during berthing time, and the long-standing commitment to the Marine Training Centre in the South Pacific. In the past 50 years, more than 5,000 people have received seafaring training, thus providing them with valuable career prospects – in a region where work opportunities are urgently needed.

The Sustainability Report 2016/17 can be downloaded in German and English from the Hamburg Süd website. You can find the link in the bar to the right.
