We are delighted to invite you to a unique opportunity to hear more about the Australia-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations from Dr Cecelia Malmström, the European Union’s Commissioner (Minister) for Trade.

This luncheon takes place in collaboration with our event partner EABC and allows you to hear more about how the EU and Australia want to remove tariff and non-tariff barriers in their relationship.

While the European Union is already Australia’s largest economic partner, with trade in goods and services reaching almost $100bn, and two-way investment of over $1.7 trillion, the FTA will open up new opportunities for businesses on both sides, opening markets and streamlining regulatory systems for the services sector, in the digital economy, for innovation, and global supply chains.

The announcement of this new FTA negotiation also sends a powerful message about the EU’s and Australia’s joint commitment to free, fair and open trade.

Commissioner Cecilia Malmström
Dr Cecilia Malmström is a Swedish politician who has served as European Commissioner for Trade since 2014, having previously served as European Commissioner for Home Affairs from 2010 to 2014. In her current position, she represents the EU in the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and other international trade fora. She is also responsible for negotiating bilateral trade agreement with key countries which respect Europe’s safety, health, social and data protection standards, and cultural diversity. Prior to her appointment as a Commissioner, she had served as a Member of the European Parliament 1999–2006 and as Swedish Minister for European Union Affairs from 2006 to 2010. She is a member of the Liberal People’s Party, which is represented by the ALDE in the European Parliament, and holds a PhD in Political Science from Göteborg University in Sweden.
