Event report: Europeans at The Gallery

30.05.17 Homepage

More than 350 members and friends of the European community gathered at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne to enjoy not only a wonderful networking opportunity to meet our European neighbours in Melbourne. On 29 May, the combined Europeans Chambers and Business Councils representing the German, Czech, British, Dutch, Finnish, French, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish and Swiss and Advantage Austria, Flanders Investment and European Business enjoyed the privilege of an exclusive private viewing of this year’s Winter Masterpieces Exhibition ‘Van Gogh and the Seasons’.

Our guests were honoured to be welcomed by Willem Cosijn, Consul-General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who charmingly reminded us many times of the fact that van Gogh was Dutch and earned some laughter with the attempt to teach us how to pronounce the artist’s name correctly.

Dr Ted Gott, Senior Curator, International Art of the NGV then welcomed our guests on behalf of the NGV and gave a great overview and introduction to the exhibition.

The exhibition enabled viewers to contemplate Van Gogh’s life and experiences through his paintings and observations of the seasonal changes within the natural world. The seasons had profound meaning for Van Gogh: they represent the circle of life within nature – birth, bloom, maturity and death. Drawing extensively from Van Gogh’s works, letters and from research into his deep interest in literature and nature, 'Van Gogh and the Seasons' explores the influences and themes that dominate much of this visionary artist’s work.

We would like to thank our sponsor Exhibition Centre and their General Manager Ian Knox for the important contribution to the success of our event.

Congratulations to all guests that were lucky enough to win one of the prizes provided by the different Chambers: a Belgium gift pack (Belgium Beer kindly provided by CUB; Belgium chocolate from Flanders Investment & Trade Australia), a French bottle of wine (Cotes du Rhone 2012 by Chapoutier, a French and Australian Wine producer),  a Hophaus voucher (Food & Beverage voucher to the value of AUD 120 donated by Hophaus, Bier Bar & Grill) and the Exhibition Centre Voucher to the value of AUD 500 by the event’s sponsor.
