4th Annual Chamber and Allianz Golf Day

With the typical ‘four-seasons-in-one-day’ weather, Melbourne has certainly delivered on its promise and welcomed our guests for our 4th Annual German Chamber & Allianz Golf Day with a capricious mix of sunshine, rain and wind.

On 25 September, we hosted our golf day at the renowned Metropolitan Golf Club. The club is a private members’ course, which opens its doors exclusively for German-Australian Chamber members on this special day. It also enjoys a reputation as one of the best-conditioned and most beautiful courses in the country. With 15 groups competing in this year’s golf day, the event was well-attended by our sponsors and members.

By the time everyone had registered, enjoyed a light lunch, and made their way over for a group picture, our players were greeted by rain for the shotgun tee-off at 1 o’clock!

Despite the challenging weather conditions, all players really seemed to be on top of their game. An incredible number of 12 guests won the Beat the Pro competition, where our amateurs had a chance to challenge a professional golfer during the tournament. All winners entered into a draw and Toby Jarrett was final lucky winner who received a voucher for a round of golf for four people, kindly provided by the Metropolitan Golf Club.

At hole number seven, our golfers had the chance to win a brand-new Audi A3 at the Hole in One competition. Despite several bribing attempts, our Chamber ladies remained steadfast while camping out and enduring the headwinds in order to witness a potential hole-in-one. Some players came remarkably close with some missing by only a few centimetres. Unfortunately, no one won the hole-in-one prize. This may be exactly the kind of motivation for yet more players to join us next year…

To keep energy levels high for all the different competitions, Events Coordinator Angie Stender made sure that our golfers were well-hydrated and fed with sugary snacks, driving around the Metropolitan Golf Club in the beverage cart that was provided kindly by Stihl.

After four good hours on the greens, the teams started to make their way back to the beautiful clubhouse for pre-dinner drinks, before moving onto the dining room to enjoy a delicious three-course dinner and review the successful day.

Some great prizes were made available to the winners thanks to our Platinum Sponsor Allianz, our Gold Sponsor Audi, and Beverage Cart Sponsor Stihl.

Here are our winners!

1st Place (prize sponsored by Allianz)

with a score of 53.5: Hayden Baker (Allianz), Paul Pryor (Aon), Maurice Gatto (JLT) & Paul Close (Marsh)

2nd Place (prize sponsored by Audi)

with a score of 54.75: Ray Michelsons (Audi), Rudi Michelson (Monsoon Communications) Andrew Wallis (Wallis Payne) & Stuart Spencer

3rd Place (prize sponsored by Stihl)

with a score of 55.5: Scott Highfield (Hophaus), Chris Dore (Hophaus), Haiden George (Hophaus) & Cian O’Neil (Hophaus)

We would like to congratulate the winning team from Allianz, as well as the Audi team, who came second, and the team from Hophaus, who came third. The winning team received trophies, Allianz duffle bags and selected bottles of German wine. The second team went home with backpacks sponsored by Audi, and the team who came third was handed shrub shears donated by Stihl, which might come in handy the next time a golf ball lands off the beaten track.

Congratulations also go to the closest-to-the-pin and longest-drive winners Gregg Fowler from Henning Harders and Ryan Goldberg from Recognition ID, who won a voucher to the German Chamber Oktoberfest and a bottle of wine.

For those players who did not make it onto the winners’ podium, there was the chance to win more fantastic prizes in the raffle, which were kindly donated by our member companies.

The first prize went to Tim Hickey, who took home a Hammer Drill from R.Bosch. The second prize – an elegant fruit traverse (Villeroy & Boch) – was won by Karl Mociak. Lee Gooch will be able to enjoy an interactive dinner at the Melba restaurant (Langham), while Margaret Harvey was delighted to receive a dinner voucher and gift basket from Hophaus.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors and the Metropolitan Golf Club for helping us make the German-Australian Chamber & Allianz Golf Day such a resounding success. We would especially like to thank our main sponsor Allianz for its outstanding support. Our appreciation also extends to Audi, which gave our players the tantalising chance to win one of its great cars. Thanks also to our Beverage cart sponsor STIHL and to our in-kind sponsors.

As they say, the most important shot in golf is the next one. So, we hope to see you all again next year!
