New Year's Receptions - February 2017

In February, the German-Australian Chamber was pleased to hold three New Year's Receptions in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Each event was a fantastic opportunity for members and friends to meet with the chamber staff and board, network and hear about the exciting functions during the 40th anniversary.

Following many successful years, nearly 700 members and friends of 15 European Chambers joined the 16th Cruise with the Europeans on Thursday, 10 November 2016. The MV Sydney 2000, waited at King St Wharf, Jetty No. 1 for everyone to board.

On Friday, 16 September 2016, the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce had the pleasure of inviting its members and friends to its 4th Annual Gala Dinner. With the event sold out weeks in advance and nearly 200 people from Chamber members, German and Australian businesses, and high-level political representatives in attendance, the James Cook Ballroom at the InterContinental Sydney was filled to the very last seat.

President and Ambassador’s Farewell - June 2016

The German-Australian Chamber had the great pleasure of hosting a farewell for Former Chamber President Ms Lucy Hughes Turnbull AO and German Ambassador to Australia H.E. Dr Christoph Müller.

Taking place at the beautiful Chiswick function room at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, this special event was made possible with the kind support of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany. Ms Turnbull and Dr Müller are two very influential figures who have done much to improve and build on the German-Australian bilateral relationship.

The German-Australian Chamber launched a topic related event series this year, kicking it off with three events about the German Australian Double Tax Agreement. These informative events were hosted by three different Chamber-member companies and included presentations about the new tax agreement. Members had afterwards time to address their questions, accompanied by delicious drinks and food.

To spread information about the Double Tax agreement all over Australia, events were located in Melbourne, Sydney and for the first time also in Brisbane, organised by our newly established Queensland Chapter.

What an inspiring and interesting day Thursday has been. We welcomed roughly 90 Members for our AGM & Economic Outlook, which was kindly hosted by Deutsche Bank in Melbourne on 19 May 2016. 

At the AGM we re-elected the current German-Australian Chamber’s board and expanded the Board with five very experienced executives. The new Honorary President, Mr Andrew Mackenzie, CEO of BHP Billiton, was also elected on the day.

At the beginning of March, the German-Australian Chamber was privileged to facilitate a three-day delegation trip to Adelaide, highlighting South Australia’s growing status in scientific research and unique role as the “defence state”. South Australia has one of the largest manufacturing and defence industries in the country and happens to have the only state government with a dedicated Minister for Defence Industries. In particular, Adelaide is home to a large proportion of Australia’s defence sector, which contributes more than $1 billion to South Australia’s Gross State Product.

On 21 October, the German-Chamber of Industry and Commerce, together with Premium Partner SAP, hosted a roundtable discussion followed by an exclusive luncheon on the occasion of the visit of Professor Dr Maria Boehmer, Minister of State and head of the German side of the Australia-Germany Advisory Group (AGAG). In the evening President Lucy Hughes Turnbull AO hosted a Reception at her residence.

Berlin Delegation: What's next in the bilateral business relationship?
The visit to Berlin directly preceded the first full meeting of the Australia-Germany Advisory Group, which was established by German Chancellor Merkel and former Australian Prime Minister Abbott during their discussions in Sydney in November 2014.This was just before Chancellor Merkel attended the German-Australian Business Reception organised by GACIC.

On Thursday 7 May, around 70 invited guests of the German-Australian Chamber of Commerce and The Committee for Sydney made their way to the Museum of Contemporary Art in The Rocks, to participate in the first Berlin-Sydney Online Roundtable and discuss the future of these two extraordinary cities.

The German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce hosted a Business Reception in honour of H.E. Dr Angela Merkel. Her program in Sydney followed the G20 Leadership Summit in Brisbane. This reception was part of the first visit of a German Chancellor to Australia in more than 15 years

One of the topics mentioned by Chancellor Dr Merkel was the importance of a future EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to expand the already strong commercial ties. The FTA be also one of the key topics of the bilateral working group announced by Chancellor Merkel and Australian Prime Minister Abbott the night before.
